It’s here…BEST EVENT EVER!!!

If you have the time to play the game a lot this weekend, this is your chance to get a lot of radios. This is about the only event I’ll buy a gas booster (or 3!) for. 

If you aren’t buying a gas booster, or even if you are, replaying the Season 7 Tara mission (#6) on easy is the quickest and easiest way to get radios; to optimize your speed (and thus more radios on a gas booster), just run to the exit and don’t bother killing the walkers.  You won’t be getting many supplies, xp or any good gear, but the mission is the best value for your gas (only costs 1 gas!). 

You can also get gear in gold crates in Food/Supply missions during this event.

Challenge Rework Overview

I was lucky enough to beta test the new Challenge Rework, so hopefully my experiences can help everyone understand what to do when they first start playing the new Challenges. Thanks to NG for allowing me into the beta testing group!! (Please be aware that these pictures may not show the same costs/rewards as you will see when the update goes live.) For the reward structure, click here.

I will be using the following terms for challenges.

  • Maps – Like before, this refers to the playable maps that you play to earn stars.
  • Rounds – A “Round” is just the complete set of 6 maps.
  • Bonus Stars – These are the stars you earn for successfully completing a round. The old “Bonus Star” system is no longer active; Quests like “Use All Hunter Team” will no longer give extra stars on Challenge Missions.

Let’s take a look at the Challenge Home Screen:

Here’s the breakdown of what you see on the Screen.

  1. Challenge Info Screen – Clicking here will show you some of your individual and guild stats in challenges. Overview 03.PNG
  2. Round Level – This is the level of difficulty of the Round. The Round Level is how many Bonus Stars you earn after completing the Round.
  3.  Round Info – This shows how many maps you have completed towards beating the Round and the Rewards for beating the current Round. This is also where you advance to the next Round. IMG_6476.PNG
    • This screen will automatically pop up when you get at least 1 Star on all 6 maps. If you earned 1 or 2 Stars on a Map, and want to replay the map to try to get 3 Stars, make sure to hit the “Back to Missions” button. Once you hit “Move on to the Next Round”, you can’t go back.
  4. Personal Star Count and progress towards next reward.
  5. Guild Star Count and progress towards next reward.
  6. Map Information shows how many stars you’ve earned on the specific map.
    • BE VERY CAREFUL!!! You can replay maps even after you’ve earned 3 stars for the map. Don’t accidentally waste your gas on a map you’ve already earned 3 stars on!!!

Here are some important aspects of the new Challenge Structure:

  • Most people won’t start at Recommended Survivor Level (RSL) 3 difficulty missions. You will be started at a difficulty level based on the Level of your Top 3 Survivors.
    • For me, I started at RSL Level 14 difficulty and have Level 20 Survivors.
  • In order to advance, you must earn at least 1 Star on each “Round” of all 6 Maps. You do not have to earn 3 Stars on each map in order to advance past the “Round.”
  • If you don’t earn 3 Stars on a map, you may replay the Map and try to earn 3 Stars. 3 Stars is the maximum you can earn on each map. Again, be careful not to replay a map you have already earned 3 stars on. These are intentionally left playable after you earn 3 stars so you can “farm” them if you want to.
  • If you replay a map multiple times, only your HIGHEST STAR TOTAL for that map counts; it doesn’t add up the stars you have earned every time you play the map.
    • So, you must complete all goals on a map to get 3 stars in order to earn 3 stars for the map on each Round. Getting 2 stars one time and 1 star another time won’t add up to 3 stars for the map; you will still only have 2 stars for the map as that was your best individual score for the map on that Round.


As you can see, I only earned two stars on the bottom right map. I am still allowed to move on to the next Round, but I can also keep trying to get 3 stars on that map before advancing to the next Round.

  • After you are satisfied with the number of Stars you earned on each map, you may now advance past the Round and on to a new Round with a higher difficulty.
    • Beating the Round will give you “Bonus Stars” equal to the Level of the Round you just completed. For example, after completing Level 15, you will earn 15 Bonus Stars (10 Bonus Stars for completing Level 10, 20 Bonus Stars for completing Level 20, and so on).
    • So, the potential number of Stars you can earn is 18 Stars for completing all 6 of the maps perfectly, plus bonus Stars equal to the Level of the Round you just completed.

  • As you approach Round Levels close to the Level of your Survivors, you will eventually have to beat each Round Level multiple times. Each progression will be slightly higher than the previous level.
  • As you can see in the picture below, there are 3 segments to the Level 20 icon. This means that there will be 3x Level 20 Rounds to beat. Each of these 3 Rounds at Level 20 will award Bonus Stars and Trade Goods.


Other Stuff

  • You will earn a lot more Stars under the current format.
  • If you buy a Gas Booster, I think it will be best to buy Gas early in the challenge to give you more time to beat the harder levels on the last days of the challenge. Buying a Gas Booster early will allow you to speed through the easier maps faster, then slowly try to beat the harder maps the last few days. If you purchase a Gas Booster later in the challenge, you will most likely be spending more Gold to heal your Survivors as you try to complete many difficult missions as the challenge comes to an end.
  • The “cool down” timer works differently now. There is no timer unless you beat 3 maps within 90 minutes. Then, there is a 1 hour wait until you can advance to the next Round, but you can still play the maps and earn stars; you just need to wait for the timer to end before advancing to the next round.
  • You will play a lot more higher level maps. The “low level” grind is now replaced with the “high level” grind that will give better rewards.

Level 20 Guide

If you have at least 3x Level 20 Survivors, these are the costs for the Rounds you will encounter. I think these costs are accurate, but things could have changed. Keep in mind that if you sleep for 8 hours a day, but maximize your gas, you will generate about 720 Gas over the 5 days of the Challenge (not factoring in Gas from Post-Mission Reward Crates). That will get you somewhere around Level 26.

“CUM Gas” is the Cumulative Gas that it takes to get through the level (assuming you don’t repeat a map), and “CUM Stars” is the amount of total Stars you’d earn if you got 3 Stars on each map.

Update 2.3 Release Notes

Today we got the first look at what will be included in the 2.3 Update. Here’s a quick summary.

  • Gameplay/Balancing
    • Building Points (Player Level) should be fixed. All players should now have consistent Player Levels/Building Points.
      • Also, all maxed out players should get Level 20 gear from Legendary Crates!!!
    • Overwatch logic has been tweaked.
      • The Range of each Survivor’s Overwatch attack is now considered when choosing targets. So, melee Survivors shouldn’t have their overwatch kills “stolen” by ranged Survivors, and Survivors should attack enemies that are closer to them more often.
    • Outposts
      • Special walkers should now be moved further away from your Survivors’ starting position.
      • You will not lose Gas if you go to start a Raid, and get the “Player has come online” message that prevents the Raid from happening.
      • You may need to adjust your Outpost setup to account for these changes.
      • There should now be at least 6 walkers in every Outpost.
    • Traits
      • Rick’s “Take Cover” Leader Trait has been removed. Instead, his new Trait is “Close Call”: Your survivors’ attacks deal more damage if the target is next to an ally.
      • Michonne’s “Thinning the Herd” now works this way: “Your team’s melee kills have a chance of reducing threat and a chance of regaining an action point.” This sounds awesome, if you can ever unlock her!! It’s basically Threat Reduction and Swift Strike!!!
      • Jesus and Abraham’s leader traits also improve the health of melee/ranged Survivors, in addition to adding damage. This has apparently always been the case, but was never stated.
      • Charging now works like this: “chance to get an extra charge point from a kill and charge attacks deal more damage.”
      • Power Strike now works as follows: “Attacks made on your turn deal more damage AND HAVE A BETTER CRITICAL CHANCE if you have not moved.”
  • Interface
    • A counter has been added to show how many total pieces of equipment you have in your inventory. The limit for total quantity of equipment is 300 pieces.
    • Guild info and leaderboards can now be seen when the Challenge is inactive.
    • Equipment cards where gear is shown now feature the icon for the what class it belongs to.
    • The class sorting menu on the Team Selection screen is now visible!!
    • Auto center removed??
    • Outposts Wins/Losses have been changed to include “Draws”. A Draw will happen when a Raider only collects the flag, but the other two goals are left incomplete when no Trade Goods or Influence changes hands.
    • Trade Good Shop will now have a confirmation screen when purchasing all items.
  • Rewards
    • Killing a defending Hero in Outpost now gives XP, and more XP than non-Hero defenders.
    • Hard Scavenge missions now provide more Supplies/XP/Phone/Gas in the crates at the end of the mission, and the Gear found in these crates will be more rare more often.
      • Not sure what this means yet.
  • Content
    • New Guild Challenge Mission: Alexandria
    • New Scavenge Maps: 48 total maps and some have been tweaked
  • Under the Hood
    • “Veteran users may notice some subtle changes to aspects of the game. While these do not directly affect gameplay or rewards, players may find it useful to know that these features have been worked on, and additional future work may be forthcoming”
    • Delivery of in-game ads in the Cinema and after missions has been re-implemented.
    • Guild and Challenge Leaderboards are reimplemented using new software.

The New Trade Good Economy

With the 2.1 update, the game economy has had a drastic change.

  • Previously, Class & Hero Tokens could only be acquired with Radios. Now, we can get Tokens with Trade Goods, adding to their value in one way.
  • 1 Radio is now equivalent to 600 Trade Goods. For 600 Trade Goods, you can either:
    • Buy 8 Class Tokens
    • Make a 1x Radio Call (most likely worth 2 Tokens, but a chance for more.)
  • Here’s what you can currently buy in the Trade Good Store
    • 1 Radio = 600 TGs
    • 3 Radios = 1,800 TGs
    • 5 Radios = 3,000 TGs
    • 8 Class Tokens = 600 TGs
    • 30 Class Tokens = 2,500 TGs
    • 4 Hero Tokens = 800 TGs
    • Silver Crate = 200 TGs
    • Gold Crate = 500 TGs
    • Rare Crate = 1,500 TGs
    • Epic Crate = 3,000 TGs (new, lower cost)
    • Legendary Crate = 7,500 TGs
    • Legendary Weapon w/ Random Traits = 12,500 TGs
    • 10,000 Trade Goods = 2,500,000 Food
    • 400 Trade Goods = 100,000 Food

Trade Good Budget

  • In a perfect world, we’d have more than enough Trade Goods to buy everything offered in the Trade Good Store.
  • However, Trade Goods are not unlimited, but what’s our Trade Good Budget?
    • 10,500 Maximum Trade Goods a week from Outpost Building.
      • ~1,500 Maximum a day x 7 days = 10,500 Maximum Trade Goods
    • Here’s how many Trade Goods you get based on the Stars you earn in a week:
      • 530 Stars: 13,000 Total Trade Goods a week
      • 440 Stars: 11,400 Total Trade Goods a week
      • 370 Stars: 9,900 Total Trade Goods a week
      • 310 Stars: 8,500 Total Trade Goods a week
      • 260 Stars: 7,200 Total Trade Goods a week
      • 220 Stars: 6,000 Total Trade Goods a week
      • 170 Stars: 4,900 Total Trade Goods a week
      • 120 Stars: 3,900 Total Trade Goods a week
  • So, if you get 220 Stars a week, and collect from your Outpost pretty efficiently…
    • your Trade Good Budget for the week would be about 16,000
      • (6,000 + ~10,000 Trade Goods = 16,000 Trade Good Budget)
  • To be able to purchase more stuff from the Trade Good Store, you will need to raid!!


  • If you are focusing on Tokens, you have the chance to buy class Tokens 6 times a day, costing 3,600 Tokens if you purchase every available option.
    • 25,200 Trade Goods is the cost of buying all the available class tokens for a week.
  • Hero Tokens aren’t always an available option, but let’s assume they are available 2 times a day. That would be 14 chances for Hero Tokens a week:
    • 11,200 Trade Goods is the cost of buying 14 Hero Tokens in a week.
  • Radios cost 600 TGs per radio, and are available to be purchased 1 Radio or 3 Radios (1,800 TGs) at a time.
  • Crates are still available in the Trade Good Store, but you can’t buy unlimited crates like you were previously able:
    • Legendary Crate: 7,500 TG
    • Epic Crate: 3,000 TG (lower cost)
    • Rare Crate: 1,500 TG
    • Gold Crate: 500 TG
    • Silver Crate: 200 TG

Smart Raiding

To be able to buy as much stuff as possible from the Trade Good Store, you’re going to need to Raid efficiently with the new changes to Outposts.

  • There have been some changes to Outposts in Update 2.1.
    • To get Trade Goods from a Raid, you must open the Trade Good Crate by the enemies Defenders.
    • To get Influence from a Raid, you must kill the Defenders in the Outpost.
    • When you are Raided, you no longer lose any of your Trade Goods, but still lose Influence if your Defenders are killed.
  • Here’s my strategy for Raiding.
    • My goal is to kill the Walkers, Open the Gate, Grab the Trade Goods, then leave the mission without injury and Hospital Time. This is not always possible, but we can try to maximize our chances.
    • Bring a Scout on your Raid to utilize the extra movement. There are some map setups that allow you to grab the Trade Goods without having to engage the Defenders: this is the ideal setup to attack, but isn’t possible against Rural Fields.
    • Don’t attack the Rural Field Map!!
    • When getting ready to open the gate, place your Scout in the best position to run for the Trade Good Crate. If it’s close enough, you can open the Trade Good Box immediately after the gate is opened, and the Defenders won’t attack you.
    • Ignore the Defenders and “Complete” the mission.
